PRESS NOTE

MALVERN TO WELCOME RENOWNED CLARINETIST

There are few better-known names in the world of classical music than the brilliant clarinetist EMMA JOHNSON.  Malvern Concert Club is excited to welcome this distinguished artist for its first concert of 2010.  She won the prestigious BBC Young Musician award at a very early age and then completed her education studying Music and English at Cambridge before embarking on a full-time performing career. Many works have been composed specially for her. She has over 20 discs to her name and is frequently on radio and TV as well as concert platforms.  She has directed concerts from the clarinet and has also been active in charity work, particularly in connection with children’s cancer. As the Daily Telegraph put it ‘To make a career as a solo clarinetist is especially hard, but Emma Johnson has managed it’.

Two distinguished British colleagues will be joining Emma in this concert. PHILIP DUKES was described by The Times as ‘Great Britain’s most outstanding solo Viola player’ and has many major international concerts and recordings to his name as well being Professor of Viola at the Royal Academy.  JOHN LENEHAN is noted for his work as solo pianist and with leading chamber groups; he has appeared with such musicians as Nigel Kennedy and Julian Lloyd Webber and is featured on many recordings.

These outstanding musicians will perform for Malvern a programme of mainly of 19th century Romantic works by Schumann, Brahms and Max Bruch. The concert will conclude with Mozart’s exhilarating ‘skittle alley’ trio; guaranteed to blow away any remaining winter blues.

The Club expects one of its biggest audiences of the season for this outstanding event.  Tickets (Adult £15, concessions £14, students £5) for the concert, at The Forum Malvern Theatres at 7 30 pm on Thursday 28 January, are available from the Theatres Box Office 01684 892277
