Malvern Concert
Club Newsletter No 3
Season 106 13 November 2008 Please
ensure that your Mobile Phone
and
any other electronic devices are switched off.
Welcome
to our final concert of 2008.
We are delighted to welcome the Anglo-Irish Carducci
Quartet who have risen to the ‘much-sought-after’ category within a
short time and whose name appears on the schedules of concert societies over a
wide area. They have just returned
from an extensive tour of the USA. Their
own Festival at the lovely Parry church at Highnam, near Gloucester, in May is
very well worth your attention. The
term ‘rising stars’ is overused but quite applicable here – however,
between engaging a group in this category and the actual concert, we often find
that their star has soared! We hope
that copies of the group’s recent CDs will be available for purchase.
The Malvern Gazette – 7 Novenber – carried a preview of the concert (with
colour photo!) Gould
Trio/ Robert Plane 23 October. This
was one of the most successful Concert Club events we can recall.
The enthusiasm of the audience for the players and vice-versa was
manifest and the Messiaen End of Time quartet was received with the
silence followed by great applause that it richly deserved.
Apologies for not listing all the performers in the programme - Lucy
Gould - violin, Alice Neary – cello, Benjamin Frith – piano and Robert Plane clarinet. The
Club’s Officers have
received many complimentary remarks since the concert. The concert was reviewed
in the Malvern Gazette for 7 November. We
had feared that programming the Messiaen might reduce the size of the audience
but this did not occur. The rush
for purchase of the CD of the Messiaen at the end of the concert was
unparalleled in our experience. Apologies
to those to whom the late ending of the concert may have caused transport
problems. Our next concert is well after the Christmas
and New Year season, so the Club’s Officers and Committee take this
opportunity to wish all Members and all concertgoers a happy and musical time.
We will reassemble on 29 January for a cello and keyboard recital
– but one with a difference. The
eminent international musician, Steven Isserlis will be playing
Bach, Handel and Scarlatti on a baroque cello and will be accompanied by
the noted American harpsichordist Maggie Cole.
We expect this concert to attract tremendous interest so suggest that
you advise all friends and family who are not Members to
get their tickets as soon as they can. Some,
but not all,
of the tickets in Members ticket books for the 29 January event carry the year
as ‘2008’ rather than ‘2009’, as it should be.
How this occurred is a mystery to us but if this is in your book then
just ignore it – the tickets will be honoured as usual! Looking ahead You
will all have your New Year diaries by now so we can give you the dates for next
year’s season for you to make the appropriate entries. The
concerts will be on: 24
September 2009 22
October 2009 12
November 2009 28
January 2010 25
March 2010
6 May 2010 We can promise an exciting and stimulating programme and look forward to your company. 2nd Hand CDs.
Joe
Brand’s popular stall, in aid of Club funds, with your kind donations, will be
operating this evening so do see what bargains (?Christmas gifts) you can
collect in the interval or after the concert.
Members have been especially generous this time so there is plenty to
choose from. Elgar’s
Legacy: Centennial History of the Malvern Concert Club. This remarkable detailed 440 page story of our
Club by our Archivist, and past Chairman, Michael Messenger, is still available
to members and other concertgoers at a special price of £5.00 a copy.
This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a Christmas gift; it may be
purchased from Ernie Kay at the Display Table in the Hall. Thank you to all our Programme Advertisers and to: The Elmley
Foundation, our principal season sponsor, Aldine Print,
Hunts the Florists, the Malvern Gazette
and Malvern Theatres for practical help. And
of course to you, our audience, for your support, buying Raffle Tickets
and taking Posters for display for the next concert; these are vital for
our finances and publicity. CHAMBER MUSIC CHOICE is as always the invaluable
guide to the season’s variety of concerts in this field in the West Midlands.
